Measuring for track lighting

Een meetlint.

Would you like to install track lighting, but aren't sure exactly how to determine the best track dimensions? In this blog, we'll give you tips for determining the dimensions of your track lighting.

When measuring your tracks, we are referring to the track's most important measurement: the overall dimension. This measurement determines the size of the track. To achieve a beautiful result, it is important to measure correctly. Therefore, carefully use the dimensions in the table below to make sure you purchase the right size. The dimensions of track lighting depend on the shape and length of your track. Track lighting has various connectors, each with different dimensions, which fit between your tracks. Track lighting can be connected in a straight line, an L-shaped corner, or even as a square.

Tips for measuring track lighting

  • For convenience, measure the distance of your track on the floor (but make sure your tracks won't encounter any obstacles on the ceiling).
  • Remember to account for any additional connectors you need when using multiple tracks.
  • Calculate the total overall dimension from the feed, track, connector, and end cap. (See the dimensions in the table.)
  • Track lighting can be shortened with a hacksaw. Can't you quite make the measurements work? You can easily cut it to size yourself.
  • First, check where your light point (ceiling junction box) is located. This determines whether you will use an end feed or a center feed.
  • Tracks longer than 1.5 meters must be shipped by courier, which may involve higher costs. Shorter tracks are therefore often a cheaper alternative.

Measuring tips for an I-shape / straight line

A straight line of track lighting is the easiest shape to measure. Start at the outermost end of your track and determine the other end. For example, you can assemble the tracks as follows: end feed - 1 m track - I-connector - 1 m track - end cap or, in the case of a center feed: end cap - 1 m track - center feed - 1 m track - end cap.

Measuring tips for an L-shape / corner

Would you like to install your track lighting in an L shape to emphasize the room? Measure the two sides of the corner. For example, you may want to install a 2 by 1 meter rail and connect it from one end to the other from a single power point. Build the rails as follows: End feed - 1 m rail - L connector - 1 m rail - I connector - 1 m rail - end cap or, in the case of a center feed: End cap - 1 m rail - L connector - 1 m rail - center feed - 1 m rail - end cap.

Measuring tips for a square or rectangle

You can even install track lighting in a rectangle or square. This can create an attractive finished look, for example when you want to connect two parallel rails to each other. For a rectangle, you always connect your power point via a center feed. There is one exception: with 3-circuit track lighting, you can start your power supply in an L connector. To create a rectangle, use these components: L connector - 1 m rail - L connector - 1 m rail - center feed - 1 m rail - L connector - 1 m rail - L connector - 1 m rail - center feed - 1 m rail.

In the example above, we use two center feeds, so you do not have to cut your rectangle on one side. A center feed can, for example, be 10 cm long; if you add only one, you will be short on the opposite side and will not be able to connect the rails. That is why we use two center feeds, only one of which is connected to the power point.
