One of our best-selling product types is undoubtedly track lighting. Track lighting is a versatile, but above all practical, form of lighting that is suitable for many different shops and spaces. Whereas track lighting was previously used only in supermarkets and clothing stores, it is now also found in a variety of interior styles.

What is track lighting?

Track lighting is—as the name suggests—lighting that hangs from a track. There are several types of track lighting, but the track spotlight is by far the most commonly used. Lighting attached to a track can be rotated 360 degrees. This makes it easy to direct the lighting wherever you want it. You can also easily change its position along the track. When your shop’s interior is redesigned, track lighting allows you to easily adapt your lighting plan to the interior. This makes track lighting extremely suitable for the retail sector. In addition, you only need one cable per track for track lighting. This means you do not have to install a new cable for each lamp, but can easily connect your entire lighting plan to just a few cables.

How do you install track lighting?

Track lighting is relatively easy to install. In this step-by-step guide, we explain how to do it most effectively!

1. Choose the location and switch off the power. When you want to install a track system, one end of the track must be positioned near a power point that can supply electricity to the track. Always switch off the power when working with lighting, and use a voltage tester to check that the power is actually off.
2. Determine the shape of the track system. Thanks to the many accessories, you can easily create an entire network of tracks. Always measure your ceiling beforehand and consider what you want your lighting plan to look like.
3. Install the tracks. The tracks have pre-drilled holes. All you need to do is drill holes in the ceiling with a drill and screw the tracks into place.
4. Connect the electrical wires. First, strip the wires. Then you need a terminal block, which has two or three openings. Two of the openings are for the black and blue wires. There is often another opening in the middle for the earth wire (the yellow-green wire). If you have an earthed lamp, connect this wire to the terminal block as well. Open the terminals on the terminal block with a small flat-head screwdriver, insert the wires into the openings, and close the terminals again.
5. Attach the track spotlights to the tracks. Because the entire track is powered, you can place and move the track spotlights anywhere you like. Always switch off the power before moving the spotlights. You can often install the track spotlights in the tracks using a simple click system. Your track system is now installed!

Types of track lighting

The difference between 1-circuit and 3-circuit track lighting

You can also choose between 1-circuit and 3-circuit track lighting. With 1-circuit track lighting, all lamps are connected to the same circuit. This means you can switch all the lamps on or off at the same time, or dim them simultaneously.

With 3-circuit track lighting, you can create 3 different lighting circuits per light track. This is often done to prevent the electrical system from becoming overloaded, but it also has the advantage that the 3 circuits can be controlled separately. You can connect all 3 circuits to separate dimmers or switches. This allows you to decide at any time how much light you want in a space, or which objects you specifically want to highlight.
