Misunderstandings about LED lighting

LED lighting is a relatively new lighting technology that has developed at a rapid pace. It is being used in more and more applications, yet people are often still somewhat skeptical about LED lighting. Below, we explain the two biggest misconceptions about LED lighting.

Does LED have poor color rendering?

It is often thought that LED has poor color rendering because the color spectrum of LED lighting often looks different from the spectrum of sunlight. However, it is not true that LED therefore has poor color rendering. A lamp’s color rendering is indicated by its Color Rendering Index (CRI). CRI is a number on a scale from 0 to 100 and indicates how closely colors under a lamp resemble those same colors in daylight. The higher the CRI, the more accurately the colors appear under the lamp.

Most LED lamps at Qub have a color rendering index, or CRI, of at least 80, which is more than sufficient for almost all applications. Do you work extensively with colors (for example, in a paint store or hair salon), where good color rendering is important? Then LED lamps with a CRI of at least 90 are recommended.

Is LED lighting only available in cold, harsh colors?

This misconception has a logical origin: the first LED lamps to enter the market were indeed available only in cool white colors. Today, the technology has developed to such an extent that LED lighting is available in all kinds of different color temperatures. Color temperature is expressed in Kelvin, and the lower the color temperature, the warmer and more orange the light. Conversely, the higher the color temperature, the cooler and bluer the light.
