Do you want to install track lighting but are unsure of the best way to determine the correct track size? In this blog, we provide tips to help you measure and choose the right dimensions for your track lighting.

When measuring track lighting, the most important dimension to consider is the external measurement. This measurement determines the overall size of the track. To achieve a precise and aesthetically pleasing result, it is crucial to measure correctly. Carefully follow the measurements provided in the table below to ensure you order the right size. The size of track lighting depends on the shape and length of your track. Different connectors add varying dimensions to your track system, depending on whether you are installing a straight line, an L-shaped corner, or even a square configuration.

Tips for Measuring Track Lighting

  • For convenience, measure the track length on the floor (but ensure no obstacles exist on the ceiling).
  • Consider additional connectors required when using multiple tracks.
  • Calculate the total external dimension, including the power feed, track, connectors, and end caps (see the measurements in the table).
  • Track lighting can be cut to size with a hacksaw. If the measurements are not exact, you can easily adjust them yourself.
  • Check the position of your light source (junction box) in advance. This determines whether you need an end feed or a centre feed.
  • Tracks longer than 1.5 metres must be shipped via courier, which may incur higher costs. Opting for shorter tracks can be a more cost-effective alternative.

Measuring Tips for an I-shape / Straight Line

A straight-line track configuration is the easiest to measure. Start at one end of your track and determine the opposite endpoint. The track can be configured as follows: end feed - 1m track - I-connector - 1m track - end cap or, in the case of a centre feed: end cap - 1m track - centre feed - 1m track - end cap.

Measuring Tips for an L-shape / Corner

If you want to install an L-shaped track to highlight the room’s layout, measure both sides of the corner. For example, if you plan to install a 2 by 1-metre track starting from a single light source, the track configuration would be: End feed - 1m track - L-connector - 1m track - I-connector - 1m track - end cap or, in the case of a centre feed: End cap - 1m track - L-connector - 1m track - centre feed - 1m track - end cap.

Measuring Tips for a Square or Rectangle

Track lighting can also be installed in a rectangular or square shape, which is ideal for connecting two parallel tracks. In a rectangle configuration, the light source is always connected via a centre feed. However, for 3-phase track lighting, you also have the option of starting the power feed at an L-connector. To create a rectangular layout, use the following components: L-connector - 1m track - L-connector - 1m track - centre feed - 1m track - L-connector - 1m track - L-connector - 1m track - centre feed - 1m track.

In the example above, we use two centre feeds, ensuring you don’t need to cut the rectangle on one side. A centre feed is typically 10cm long, and if you only use one, you may have a length discrepancy on the opposite side, preventing proper connection. By using two centre feeds, only one needs to be connected to the power source.
