LED lighting is a relatively new lighting technology that has developed at a rapid pace. It is being used in more and more applications, but people are still often somewhat sceptical about LED lighting. Below are the two biggest misconceptions about LED lighting explained.

Does LED have poor colour rendering?

It is often thought that LED has poor colour rendering because its colour spectrum often looks different from the spectrum of sunlight. However, it is not true that LED has poor colour rendering. The colour rendering of a bulb is indicated by the Color Rendering Index (CRI). CRI is a number on a scale from 0 to 100 and indicates how closely the colours under a lamp resemble the same colours under daylight. The higher the CRI, the more "colour-accurate" the colours under the lamp are.

Most LED bulbs at Qub have a colour rendering or CRI of at least 80, which is more than sufficient for nearly all applications. If you work with colours (for example, in a paint shop or hair salon), where good colour rendering is important, LED bulbs with a CRI of at least90 are recommended.

Is LED lighting only available in cold and harsh colours?

This misconception has a logical origin: the first LED bulbs on the market were indeed only available in cold white colours. Nowadays, the technology has developed so that LED is available in all sorts of differentcolour temperatures. Colour temperature is expressed in Kelvin, and the lower the colour temperature, the warmer and more orange the light is. Conversely, the higher the colour temperature, the cooler and bluer the light is.
