More and more households are using so-called smart devices or smart home systems. These are devices that enable communication via wifi. The most commonly used smart home device is smart lighting. Nowadays, smart lighting comes in all shapes and sizes. In this blog, we will tell you more about it!

What is Smart Home Lighting?

Smart home lighting is lighting that can be controlled via an app or handy accessories. This control takes place via wifi. In its simplest form, smart home lighting can only be turned on and off remotely. However, nowadays, there are also many smart lights that you can remotely dimmer, and lights where you can even change the light colour remotely. At Qub, we sell both smart bulbs and smart fixtures.

Smart Bulbs

Smart bulbs are bulbs that you can simply screw into an existing fixture and that communicate with each other, and with, for example, an app on your phone or a dedicated hub. These bulbs can be turned on and off remotely, dimmed, and often you can also adjust the light colour. These types of smart bulbs are usually available in all standard fittings, such as Smart E27 or Smart GU10. Do make sure you don’t place your smart bulbs in a fixture that blocks wifi signals, as this kind of fixture can break the connection. We often get asked whether our fixtures block the wireless connection of smart lighting. Good news, despite the aluminium casing, the smart bulbs work well with our fixtures! Often, the product description also mentions whether the fixture is compatible with smart home lighting.

Smart Fixtures

In addition, Qub also sells smart fixtures with integrated LED lighting. For example, take a look at our Tram recessed spots. These sturdy and modern recessed lights can be controlled using the Tuya Smart system, which allows you to control all the lights via an app on your smartphone. This way, you don’t have to get up from the sofa to dim the lights, and you can easily adjust the lighting colour to suit the atmosphere of the room.

Smart Dimmers

Lastly, we also sell smart dimmers from EcoDim. These dimmers are installed in almost the same way as a regular dimmer, but with the added benefit that you can control them with your smartphone. These dimmers work well with various smart home apps such as the Calex app, as well as Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant/Google Home. Do you have questions about which type of dimmer is best for your system? We understand. You can always contact our staff. They will be happy to assist you and provide advice on which dimmer is best for you.

Installing Smart Home Lighting

Luckily, most smart lighting is not difficult to install. Smart bulbs can be screwed into the fitting in the same way as a “regular” bulb. Smart fixtures typically only require power and do not need to be connected to the internet via a cable. Smart dimmers are generally installed in much the same way as regular dimmers. The installation of the control system varies depending on the system, but it is often clearly explained with an instruction manual. If you still have questions about our smart lighting, feel free to contact us! The Qub lighting experts will be happy to help you further.
